“The place looks fantastic and really feels right. Cannot wait to see how the rest unfolds!”

Project Details
When we start a project for new clients, the first step is always to identify their style preferences. Are they traditionalists or modernists … or somewhere in between? To help us tease out the answer, we assign a little homework, which includes completing a questionnaire and gathering design images that speak to them. The process is always revealing. For one recent project, we gained this important insight: our clients gravitate toward modern-eclectic style. We knew right away that this project was going to fun!
The house, located in Falls Church’s tree-lined Sleepy Hollow neighborhood, was built in 1951. Our clients popped up the roof and reimagined the facade during the earlier renovation. Now the exterior projects a mid-century-meets-Craftsman vibe — so a modern-eclectic style for the interiors made perfect sense.
The couple asked us to redesign their first-floor spaces. With one kid in college and one teenager still at home, they were ready for a sophisticated (but not stuffy) new look.

It’s a familiar story: As their kids got a little older and started to go off to school, our clients craved more grown-up spaces. They envisioned sophisticated yet somewhat eclectic interiors for their mid-century home in Falls Church’s Sleepy Hollow neighborhood. And we happily obliged.
This project involved less construction than many of ours, so we relied largely on paint, wallpaper, lighting and furniture to transform the spaces. We covered our modern-eclectic scheme earlier. Now we’re excited to share the spirited result.
The updated family room combines comfort, function and style. It’s perfect for adults and teenagers alike. A stone fireplace, with a television mounted above, serves as the focal point, so we developed the furniture plan around it.

The homeowners asked us to turn each alcove into a cozy reading nook. We partnered with many of our allied professionals to refill their request. Here is how we transformed the spaces: A metallic Tribeca Threads wall covering from Phillip Jeffries lines the backs of the nooks. Custom bench seats, plenty of throw pillows, and wall-mounted sconces ensure hours of reading pleasure.

Eclectic interiors call for eclectic artwork — and our clients had some cool pieces that we wanted to showcase. A larger-than-life portrait of the wife’s father had suffered damage and was stored away in the basement. We unearthed and restored it. That meaningful piece now enjoys a prominent placement in the family room.
A cushy Hickory Chair sofa with a chaise extension encourages lounging. We covered the sofa in a durable Crypton fabric for smart-looking durability.
Dining Room Redesign
Modern-eclectic style is on full display in the revamped dining room. The space is resplendent with color, pattern, and texture! The star of the space is a dynamic, aqua-toned wall covering from Phillip Jeffries. Digitally printed on Manila hemp, it mimics ripples of water. Mesmerizing!

The furnishings are an eclectic mix. We repurposed the clients’ traditional dining table but surrounded it with new, more contemporary chairs in two different styles. We selected a nubby tweed for the host chairs and chose two upholstery textiles for the side chairs — a performance velvet for the backs and a shagreen cowhide for the seats.

Two club chairs provide overflow seating; an ink-colored shagreen cowhide clads the outsides, while a performance velvet dresses the insides. A drum table with mother-of-pearl inlay provides a handy perch for drinks…and flowers. (add image below this text) They provide to perfect seating transition onto the foyer.

Foyer Refresh
This first-floor makeover wouldn’t have been complete with a foyer facelift. We added a Roman shade in a fun print and a colored-glass ceiling light from Tracy Glover Studio to give the space a bit of whimsy. A trio of ottomans stands ready to be pulled into the adjacent family room as needed. We upholstered each in a different hue of performance velvet.

Color in closing
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I rarely opt for bright-white walls. In this case, though, walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s White Heron (OC-57) provide a crisp backdrop that allows the art to really shine. The wife’s favorite color combination is blue and orange, so we incorporated those shades in varying doses throughout.
Whether it’s a family movie night or an adults-only dinner party, these reimagined spaces offer the perfect combination of form and function. Let us help create your home with soul and make the journey a wonderful experience!
