Our clients enlisted us to create a casual, not-stuffy gathering space for the whole family to enjoy. Our design had to take into account the room’s two dominant architectural features—a bank of floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors lining the back and a stone fireplace wall.
For the color palette, we pulled colors from the stone feature, mixing shades of taupe, tan and gold with pops of paprika. We framed the windows and doors in gold-toned linen panels, combined with sheers to filter sunlight with blocking the verdant view.
The large family room presented a space-planning challenge, which we solved by dividing it into two seating areas. In the main area, we grouped a comfortable upholstered sofa and two club chairs around the couple’s existing cocktail table, refinished in an espresso stain; the sofa faces a cabinet holding the requisite television. By the fireplace, we placed two French Country-style armchairs from the owners’ collection, recovered in a floral print with a primitive quality. Contemporary abstract artwork over the mantel provides interesting juxtaposition.
