Getting all dressed up and going out on Valentine’s Day is great, but, personally, I love a nice quiet evening in with my lovie. There’s nothing more romantic than enjoying champagne and a decadent dessert by candlelight — except, possibly, when you add a roaring fire to the mix.
And is there any dessert that says “Valentine’s Day” better than a Red Velvet cake? It’s one of my favorites, in part because it holds such special meaning for me. Red Velvet cake is a big tradition in the South, and I grew up on my Great Aunt Zett’s recipe (more on that later). But I’ll let you in on a little secret: Danielle’s Desserts in Tysons Galleria bakes one that would make Aunt Zett proud: (Update: Unfortunately, Danielle’s Desserts closed in July 2019. The search is on for a new bakery – a hard act to follow!)
Danielle’s cake is a masterpiece all on its own (and a lifesaver if you’re short on time). I like to create a romantic mood, though, by bringing special touches to the table, such as pretty floral-patterned china.
I found these antique plates at The Shaggy Ram in Middleburg. They are Old Paris Porcelain — or Vieux Paris, as the French say. Given that I’m a huge Francophile, it’s no wonder that I absolutely had to bring them home! I confess…I have a bit of a china habit and love collecting sets, both new and old. Isn’t the hand-painted detail on these plates sweet?
I set out the Valentine’s Day dessert spread on our living-room cocktail table. The lovely china and serving pieces make the experience much more special.
And so do the fresh flowers! Look at this simple bunch of pink tulips — just plop them in a pretty vase and you’re done!
Everything looks better in the warm glow cast by candles and a fire.
To treat your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day, you don’t need to spend hours baking. Just pick up a special dessert at your favorite bakery and add the finishing touches that say, “I love you.” This tip applies to entertaining throughout the year too. A beautiful tablescape elevates store-bought food.
Of course, if you want to show your love by baking, that’s great too. My Great Aunt Zett’s Red Velvet Cake recipe has been passed down from generation to generation in my family. And now I’m sharing it with you, my Creating Spaces family. Enjoy!
Wishing you a beautiful and delicious Valentine’s Day! And remember, whatever the occasion, celebrate in style!
